Help Families Navigate Life

Step Stone supports children and youth, along with their parents and caregivers navigate services both within and outside Step Stone by selecting the best assessment or intervention, facilitating connections and access to wider communities and supports (e.g., OAP, HCCSS, OSAP, etc.).

Navigating together is a key step towards a brighter future, let us help…

Children

Childhood is a time of discovery and growth. Early identification of mental health, developmental, and/or academic needs, coupled with tailored intervention is key for many children and youth to enjoy happy, fulfilling lives.

We tailor interventions to meet your child’s and your family’s needs. Be it a structured treatment for childhood phobias with parent coaching components, or  unstructured play therapy for traumatic experiences and losses with family supports for wraparound care, we work with families and children with a wide range of issues, supporting parents and siblings to help the family as a system.

Adolescents

Adolescence is a time of tremendous change, growth, identity development and self-knowledge. Mental health, developmental, social, and academic challenges can make this pivotal time more difficult. Our team of skilled clinicians work to help youth process difficult experiences, target symptoms, gain skills, build self-awareness and perspective-taking towards their mental health, social, academic, and identity development needs.

Families and Family Therapy

At Step Stone we view the family as a dynamic system, which means change in one area, or within the behaviour, thoughts, feelings, or experiences of one family member can impact the family as a system. Imagine if the change is for the better, and the family all embarks upon efforts towards supporting that change. We offer family therapy that works to assist families to improve communication, connectedness, attachments, and relational functioning using a tailored approach that addresses the unique perspectives and needs of each family member to engage in the work together.

Parenting Across the Lifespan

We all do our best to be the best parents we can be. Sometimes we need support, skills, and a village to face the challenges life, our own mental health or lived experiences, and our family’s unique needs may bring.

Step Stone offers individualized parent support, parenting skills training, parent and attachment-based group therapies, beginning as early as pre-natal and post-partum mental health and adjustment support, infant-parent dyad interventions, and childhood developmental, behavioural or mental health interventions to assist families to create the mutual understanding and attachments that build a lifetime of loving connection.

We help parents of youth, emerging adult, and adults with a range of diagnoses, mental health needs, and functional concerns support individuation, planning and skills development towards greater autonomy and growth, as well as relational work to aid families reconnect after difficult years or experiences together.

Circle of Security Parenting

Circle of Security Parenting is an 8-week parent-focused group that helps parents better understand their children’s emotions, behaviours, and needs, as well as deepen their understanding of attachment and the security needs of their children in particular.

Attachment is what is created when there are strong emotional bonds established between you and your child. Attachment is important as it allows your child to grow and explore and feel secure in your love and in the world at large because they have learned, through your responses to them, that you are available and responsive to them and their needs.

Through our group, you can expect to learn how to build stronger relationships with your children and also be affirmed as a parent. You will learn about your own needs and emotions, and the ways in which there is interplay between your child’s feelings/behaviours and your own. You will gain skills and confidence in your parenting and parental responsiveness as you learn alongside other parents who on their own similar parenting journeys.

This group is well-suited for parents with children between the ages of 4-10. Children do not attend the group.  Note: important to attend all of the group’s sessions as they build upon each other. There will be a certificate issued to those who attend all eight sessions.
